One question which comes to every chess player’s mind is which tournament should I participate in? A clear understanding of the difference between FIDE rated and unrated events can really help one to choose one based on the personal goals and experience.
A FIDE Rated tournament is an event officially registered and recognized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). In FIDE Rated events every single game you play will affect your FIDE Rating. These tournaments must meet FIDE regulations regarding terms and conditions, time control and arbiters. To participate in these events, players must have a FIDE ID.
These events are organized so the players can improve their rating and international chess ranking and work to get eligible for International Chess titles and norms.
1. Players can improve official FIDE rankings.
2. They can gain experience against strong chess participants.
3.Partcipants can qualify for International chess titles and norms.
4. They can track their progress on an international scale.
An unrated tournament is an event usually organized by local clubs, schools and academies and these event organizers do not submit the results of contenders to FIDE and the results do not affect the official ranking.
These tournaments are extremely valuable to gain the experience in the beginning specially for young players to participate without risking their international chess ranking and get prepared for official tournaments.
1. Players can gain experience without any pressure of increase or decrease in ratings.
2. These events build confidence and make players feel prepared for official tournaments.
3. Players can learn tournament etiquettes and time management.
If you’re a beginner starting your chess journey and testing your competitive skills, unrated tournaments can really help build confidence .
Apart from all that, the best choice totally depends on the player's choice and long term goals. No matter in which you participate, every tournament is a great chance to learn, improve and enjoy the game of chess.
